Berlin Food Digest #20

the ice cream issue

Aug 13th, 2017

Dear Reader,

Berlin’s rainy summer seems to be driving everyone mad (check out #rollingpingate if you missed the latest Internet escalation). I say, why not chill out and eat your way through Berlin’s best ice cream instead? I’ve updated my Best Ice Cream in Berlin list to help you get through the insanity one icy scoop at a time. I’m also pleased to present a hell of a lot of new restaurant openings and gossip this month, and subscribers to the Berlin Food Digest newsletter received one hell of a juicy insider tip this week. Don’t worry if you weren’t signed up, you can hear weekly insider tips from on Spree Radio, or sign up to the newsletter here to make sure you don’t miss next month’s.

Berlin’s most anticipated restaurant opening since, well, ever, is finally open for business. Dylan, Christoph, Spencer and Paul will welcome you at their 12 seater counter for a 20+ course menu presenting some of the purest, produce-focused meals in the republic. Book now before the waitlist gets too long.

Asking people to #forgetyourdiet is a bold move in these health conscious times so it’ll be interesting to see how Berlin’s first Cookie Dough Bar fares over the next couple of months. First impressions? Enough sugar to kill a dog.

Noodle Village
This new place on Kantstr. comes with backing of Duc Ngo (a.k.a Berlin’s king of Vietnamese food) who says he’s had some seriously tasty Bun Bo Hue, Banh Xeo and Hu Tieu here.

This new super friendly cafe on Alte Schönhauser Str. offers infectiously good vibes and damn tasty sandwiches.

An inventive fusion menu, laid back dining room, Michelin star aspirations and stunning 360 views from the old 40 Seconds venue has seen this new project from Björn Swanson attract some rave reviews of late.

Night Kitchen
It’s all a little bit Midsummer Night’s Dream-esque in this new low-lit, summery garden courtyard awaiting you just off Oranienburger Str. with a Mediterranean influenced menu to match the ethereal location.

The new kids on Reichenberger Str. ferment all their own sauerkraut, Kimchee, pickles, jalapenos and hot sauces which they serve in this new Hot Dog pop-up operating out of Federica’s Cafe after 18:00.

Funky Fisch
Duc Ngo’s latest enterprise is a modern seafood restaurant right next door to his very own 893 Ryotei on Kantstr. Decent seafood in Berlin? If anyone can make it happen, it’s Duc. Opens mid August.

Brunch in Neukölln suffered a major setback when everyone’s favourite community cafe was forced to close its doors this month. SOMEONE FIND THESE GUYS A NEW HOME!

Restaurant Oderberger
Prenzlauer Berg’s one-time public baths (now hotel) will be opening its own restaurant in October. Expect regional cuisine from Berlin and Brandenburg alongside selected German wines.

Rumour has it that world-renowned chef Dominique Crenn is helping develop this art space’s new event menu. That certainly caught my attention.

My Best Ice Cream in Berlin top list just got a whole lot tastier with six new entries, a whole lot of liquid nitrogen, some surprising new flavours (including Smoked Sheep Cheese and Carrot) and a serious comeback from Waffle oder Becher who flew into this year’s list with a top 5 position after one hell of a recipe makeover. Check out the updated list now.
