I’m thrilled to announce the line up of vendors for Berlin’s street food party of the YEAR! The spectacular selection of kebab heroes for the first edition of Kebabistan is a unique mix of old school Berlin kebab masters and new school heroes, all eager to showcase their strongest kebab game. But first, let’s talk about the background of Kebabistan.
“Berlin’s chefs and restaurant owners tend to look across oceans and borders for inspiration rather than to our own backyard”
It’s 2016 and while on the one hand it’s true that the Berlin food scene has exploded into a creative and buzzing culinary hub that inspires all of Germany, it’s also true that Berlin’s chefs and restaurant owners tend to look across oceans and borders for inspiration rather than to our own backyard. They travel to all corners of the world and bring ideas back with them, from kale shakes to ramen burgers and natural wines to bone broth and success is defined by who is first to introduce these ideas to the Berlin food scene.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come to celebrate our LOVE FOR THE KEBAB!”
We tend to forget that we’re living in a city that already has an extraordinarily rich and inspiring food culture, brought here by a large group of immigrants that came to Berlin way before the wall came down. The one food item to stand out as the legacy of these food heroes is one that has been lingering in the shadows of the Berlin food scene long enough. Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come to celebrate our LOVE FOR THE KEBAB!
“Kebabistan is the street food party that celebrates the very best of Berlin kebab culture”
Kebabistan is the street food party that celebrates the very best of Berlin kebab culture. The event series that calls for you to manifest your kebab love and to embrace the kebab as a centrepiece of Berlin’s food scene. Kebabistan is in its core a conversation starter for a discussion about Berlin’s food heritage, culinary identity and the future of the kebab. We aim to build bridges between traditional and new immigrant food culture to challenge our hip “foodie ghettos” that are popping up all over Berlin. We want to use food for what it’s best at: breaking down cultural borders and defining new identities. And to define a new German food identity without the influence and inspiration of the immigrants of Berlin would be a huge mistake.
“Kebabistan is in its core a conversation starter for a discussion about Berlin’s food heritage, culinary identity and the future of the kebab”
The Döner Kebab was born in Berlin and today it co-exists next to the countless, other varieties of Arabic, Persian & Middle-Eastern kebabs. The big question is, why are we still eating the same kebabs we ate 60 years ago? Why is there so little quality thinking in the world of kebab? What is the kebab dream of 2nd and 3rd immigration kids? Together with you we would like to embark on a journey to Kebabistan to answer the one, big question: What does the Kebab of 2018 look like?
So please join us on July 16th for our very first kebab fest! The kebabmasters will fire up their grills from 15:00 and the party will be held outdoors at the Aufbauhaus on Moritzplatz, right behind Prince Charles. Let’s eat lots of kebabs, drink Ayran vom Fass, listen to Turkish hits, Arabic funk, have a beer or 4 with some raki and celebrate our love for the kebab!
The party itself is brought to you by SOUK Berlin and is one of many projects that will be conceived over the next 12 months that all aim to challenge our patterns of cultural integration in Germany, by using food as a tool to celebrate cultural difference and fluid identity.
