Café am Neuen See in Tiergarten is one of Berlin’s best and most famous Biergartens and a ice cold beer in the sun followed by a quick excursion in one of the rowing boats is a essential item on every Berliner’s bucket list.
Truth be told though, the main reason for a visit to Café am Neuen See aka CaNS is the epic scenery and venue and not really the food, the best thing to eat at this Biergarten would probably be one of their decent pizzas. Thank god you can always count on neighbours for help though, because things are about to change. One of the CaNS neighbours is the very slick design hotel Das Stue, which also happens to be home to the Michelin star restaurant CINCO by Spanish chef legend Paco Perez. So in a spontaneous act of neighbourly love the CaNS restaurant manager Florian Koch teamed up with CINCO head chef Monty Aguiló Wray to bring quality BBQ culture to the people within the project Grillen with the Chefs.

Starting from July, you can now book your own Grillen with the Chefs group sessions at CaNS where cook side by side with the pro chefs from CINCO and learn how to master the art of Spanish BBQ. I got to try out the concept last week and I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the produce and the cooking. During an epic BBQ session on a Saturday we grilled everything from delicious seafood to meat skewers and I even learned how to make a proper Valencian paella and aioli from scratch. The seafood grill section was nothing but insane, where everything from meaty razor clams to giant, sweet red prawns from Llançà and mussels were thrown on the grills and lightly grilled to smoky perfection. And then a couple of meters away another chef was showing guests how to perfectly grill meat skewers from Galician milk cows and lambs. Together with the freshly made aioli these skewers were nothing but insane. As the icing on the cake, one of the chefs cooked a proper seafood paella from scratch over open fire.

The Grillen with the Chefs event series is a very cool addition to the offering of Café am Neuen See. Not only will you learn a lot about cooking and grilling techniques, but you will also get the unique chance to hang out with the some of the city’s most relaxed fine dining chef crew and, ultimately, to enjoy some of the best grilled food in Berlin.
Next edition is happening end of August, stay tuned on Berlin Food Stories for the intel on when and where to book tickets.
