EDIT: Antipodes is permanently closed as of December 2016
Antipodes is a tiny café on the forgotten end of Berlin’s Fehrbelliner Straße in Northern Mitte operated by the loveliest New Zealand couple. Stop by for outstanding coffee, fantastic breakfast and some extraordinary friendly service.
First time I visited Antipodes was just pure luck, I was hanging out at the nearby Teutoburger Park and in the hunt for something eatable and a good cup of coffee I stumbled upon this place. It’s very small and it’s easy to just walk by the place, especially since you don’t expect anything on this very calm end of the Fehrbelliner. There are basically no other eateries or stores here. Since then Antipodes has become one of my favourite breakfasts hangouts.
The Antipodes chef loves his hollandaise and therefore he is my hero
If you like me are in to hearty, Aussie style breakfasts, this is your place to go. Hearty is the right word to use here, the food here will not always have a positive impact on your physical health. They will make you smile though, so it’s all good. Take one of my favourites: Avocado, tomatoes, bacon on English whole grain muffin drizzled with sauce hollandaise. The Antipodes chef loves his hollandaise and therefore he is my hero. He also bakes excellent New Zealand style meat pies. They are great. All of the food is homemade and seriously delicious. Usually they also serve Eggs Benedict, one of my favorite dishes served with that amazing sauce hollandaise. The coffee is outstanding, actually some of the best in the city, and they are pleasantly unpretentious about this fact, which makes me love them even more.
The warm smile of the owner is guaranteed to make all your earthly worries fade away.
The only limitation to Antipodes is really it’s size, summer time you can sit on a couple of tables on the sidewalk but wintertime is limited to the 10 seats inside. This does create a very intimate setting though and you kind of feel like coming to someone’s home, especially since everybody is so friendly and makes you feel welcome from the moment you enter the door. Antipodes is just a fantastic little café and once you step inside, the warm smile of the owner is guaranteed to make all your earthly worries fade away.
